As a chapter, Sobrato FFA travels to many different leadership conferences and conventions over the course of the year. These conferences are an excellent opportunity for FFA members to learn efficient leadership strategies that can be applied in everyday life situations. All members can go to these conferences (which are frequently during school, and so students will be excused for the duration of the conference), but we can only take a limited number of students to each conference, so turn in permission slips and other forms quickly! Click on the conference's name for more information!
The Greenhand Leadership Conference (GLC) is a leadership conference solely for first-year members. At this conference, greenhands are introduced into leadership roles in the FFA and learn strategies for better organization, confidence, and teamwork skills. The conference is in October and takes place in Paso Robles, California, in San Luis Obispo County about an hour north of Santa Barbara.
The California State Leadership Conference is the largest conference that Sobrato students normally attend. Over 5,000 FFA members from all over the state of California converge in Anaheim for a week and participate in leadership activities, attend entertainment opportunities like a concert and a dance, and meet new people from chapters up and down the state. This conference is an incredibly popular activity in the chapter.
The Made for Excellence and Advanced Leadership Academy conferences are leadership conferences designed for sophomores (MFE) and juniors/seniors (ALA). Just like at the Greenhand Conference, students will learn leadership skills as well as better strategies to an efficient chapter. This conference takes place in Monterey, California and is held in January.
The National Convention and Expo is held in Indianapolis, Indiana, and is the largest youth organization gathering in the world. Over 64,000 FFA members from all across the United States meet in Louisville for a week and learn leadership strategies that can help them run an efficient chapter. This convention is a large investment because of the distance covered, the period of time spent so far away, and the large travel costs, as a result Sobrato FFA does not usually attend this conference. If you are interested, however, you may talk to an advisor for information.
The Sacramento Leadership Experience conference (SLE) is an intensive summit based on problem-solving and stepping into the shoes of a California state legislator. This four-day conference discusses the role of government in our industry and is only open to the top 45 California FFA seniors who pass the application process. If you are a senior and wish to apply for attendance at SLE, please speak to an advisor and fill out this application.
Washington Leadership Conference, or WLC, is a national conference held in the capital of the United States at Washington DC, where students analyze leadership strategies they can take home and use in everyday situations. The conference is five days long and is open to juniors and seniors, so if you would like to attend, please speak to an advisor.
